The Aztec Equity Fund (AEF)

The Aztec Equity Fund is a student-managed investment fund at San Diego State University that invests in a portfolio of domestic financial instruments. The fund’s investment policy reflects the top-down approach of theCFA Institute.  The fund has a long-term return of about 9% per year. This year, the fund is up about 8.3% to date. Last year the fund was down 1.2%, easily outperforming its peers and most money managers during one of the most difficult investment climates in the last decade. At present the fund is about 90% invested. Student managers are engaged in developing a buy list of stocks to purchase as market conditions improve. The team is also considering methods to develop some outreach to the financial community in San Diego.

At any given time, six or more competitively selected MBA/MSBA students serve as managers of the fund for a term of two semesters. Each semester, three junior managers replace three outgoing senior managers. Individual managers prepare reports and make presentations on the macro-economic climate, on selected industries and develop screens of companies in those industries for the team to review. From the screens, candidate companies are chosen for a detailed company analysis before any decisions are made. Strict criteria on target prices for entry and exit are discussed prior to any transaction. Decisions are made by majority vote and the transaction is executed by the faculty advisor, Professor Carl Colombo, CFA (finance).

Graduate students receive 3 units of credit.  Eligible students should have taken or be enrolled in Finance 651 at the time of joining the fund. The fund typically meets weekly and a time that is mutually convenient for all managers. Please e-mail Professor Colombo, ccolombo@mail.sdsu.edu, for further details on the fund’s activities.
