What is AdClub?


The SDSU AdClub is a student organization that enables students at San Diego State to learn more about advertising as a profession. Our objective is to inform and involve students with advertising by providing agency tours, panels of guest speakers, internship opportunities, socials and resume/portfolio workshops.

SDSU AdClub is a college-chapter of the AAF. AAF's college-chapter program has 260 affiliated chapters throughout the United States and abroad. The program includes 6,000 undergraduate student members and more than 250 faculty advisers.

AAF provides numerous programs to guide its college students through advertising curriculum and job placement. AAF's programs include the following: - More than 1,000 internship opportunities - Scholarships - Career guides - Industry mentors - Networking with top agency and corporate recruiters. This is the only national organization that represents all facets of the industry including advertisers, agencies, media companies, publishers and advertising students. The AAF College Chapter program is the only national program that provides students with real world exposure to the advertising industry. The majority of dues go to the SDSU Advertising Club. The money helps our organization fund our organization.

Join our team today! Membership dues are $45 for a semester, or $80 for an academic year. Membership dues include an Ad Club t-shirt. Checks may be made out to SDSU Ad Club.

Executive Board Positions



President: The president shall be the chief executive officer of the chapter and of the board of directors and shall preside over all meetings of the chapter and the board of directors. The president shall appoint all committee chairpersons, and such appointments are subject to the approval of the board of directors. The president and the treasurer shall sign all written contracts and obligations of the chapter, which must have prior approval of the board of directors to be legal and binding.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Chief Account Manager
Account managers manage the work of advertising account executives and are responsible for client budgets and administration. Daily tasks may include dealing with all aspects of an advertising campaign, using an existing network of industry contacts to generate revenue, manage the work of account executives, lead project management activity, and researching new business leads.

Vice President: The vice president shall be vested with all the powers and shall perform all the duties of the president in the absence of the latter. The vice president will also serve as a contact/liaison between SDSU Advertising Club and Ad2 and be responsible for updating the SDSU AdCluub job binder.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Advertising Account Executive
Advertising account executives work within advertising or multi-service agencies, acting as a link between the clients and the agency. They are responsible for liaising between the client and other agency staff to coordinate the advertising campaigns. Advertising executives usually report to an account manager.

VP Programming: The vice-president of programming shall have charge of programming during meetings. The vice-president of programming shall follow the AAF program planning How-to Guide.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Advertising Account Planner:
The planner is responsible for writing the formal creative brief and for providing the ideal environment for creative development. Acting as the voice of the consumer within an agency, a planner uses research data to identify ideal audiences and optimum methods of communication. With increasing public awareness of marketing strategies, a key challenge is to develop innovative ways to reach consumers.

Treasurer: The treasurer shall receive and deposit in the name of the chapter, in a bank or trust company, all money; issue receipts; make all authorized disbursement; and at each annual meeting render an itemized statement, certified by an auditing committee. The treasure is required to attend PSFA council meetings to receive funding from the council. It is their responsibility to keep up to date with the time and place of the meetings. Role in an Advertising Agency: Advertising Clerk
Compiles advertising orders for submission to publishers and verifies conformance of published advertisements to specifications, for billing purposes: Reviews orders received from advertising agency or client to determine specifications. Computes cost of advertisement, based on size, date, position, number of insertions, and other requirements, using rate charts. Posts cost data on order and worksheet.

Interactive Media/ Design Chair: The interactive media and design chair shall be responsible in updating the design of all social media, including but not limited to: Facebook, website, Twitter and e-newsletter/ email. The chair shall also have the responsibility to design the T-shirt and any other Ad Club accessories, all designs must be approved by the executive board.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Art Director
Advertising art directors, often referred to as ‘creatives’, are responsible for producing innovative ideas for advertising campaigns in all kinds of media, including television, radio, digital, posters, press, direct mail. Art directors work in partnership with a copywriter as a 'creative team' and focus on the visual look and feel of a campaign.

VP of Communications: The communication chair shall be responsible for sending out communication e-mails to members and updating the Ad Club Board. The chair shall also be responsible for creating/ finding and posting content to all social media sites, as well as taking and publishing photos of meetings and events. They are also required to make an end of year slideshow and scrapbook.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Head Copywriter
The copywriter provides the verbal or written ‘copy’. This may include creating slogans, catchphrases, and messages for printed advertisements and leaflets. They are also involved in writing text for web advertising, as well as scripts for radio jingles and TV commercials.

VP of Membership: The membership and recruitment chair is required for the recruitment of new and returning members. They shall have the responsibility to set up classroom presentations, reserve and decorate a table for student involvement expositions, such as organization fairs, and help create flyers, posters and any assisting campaign for recruitment.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Director of Research
The Director of Research maintains all existing central files, proactively gathers data from research on prospects, updates and streamlines the central data files as necessary. The Director of Research also assists in creating strategies based on research for approach to previous and potential prospects. The Director Research has a thorough working knowledge of the database system. Helps maintain and enter updated information onto the system. The Director of Research is the principal manager of research and background information for the continued development of the company.

VP of Social Events and Community Service
: The social and networking relations chair shall be responsible for building relationships with AD2SD and SD ADCLUB and shall plan all retreats and social events. One retreat is required per semester.
Role in an Advertising Agency: Director of Public Relations
The Director of Public Relations works to develop and produce publications, brochures, and news releases to define the corporate identity to the employees, the customers, and the broader community. The director is also responsible for organizing and carrying out events to promote employee morale and community goodwill.

VP of Fundraising: The fundraising chair shall be responsible for organizing fundraisers to support the Ad Club and working with local business and the treasurer to budget and provide food for all meetings. The VP of Fundraising is required to attend PSFA council meetings to receive funding from the council. It is their responsibility to keep up to date with the time and place of the meetings. Role in an Advertising Agency: Media Buyer
Media buyers work in advertising and media agencies negotiating, purchasing and monitoring media space on behalf of their clients. They aim to reach the highest number of people in the target audience to earn the most revenue at the lowest possible cost.
