In a 26 year career, Marian Liebowitz has achieved international credentials as an executive director, a professor, a consultant, and a classical clarinetist. Her dedication to the training and promotion of emerging performers gives SDSU School of Music and Dance unique curricular offerings and programs to bring music to the community. Her philosophy is that entrepreneurial mentorship turns superior musicians into viable professionals.
In 1992 Dr. Liebowitz started the San Diego State University Adams’ Project Performers under the umbrella of the SDSU Research Foundation’s 501(C)3. The Adams’ Project is a booking agency for emerging student, alumni, and faculty performers. Under these auspices the best musicians are booked for over 150 events per year including nationwide.
Dr. Liebowitz more recently started Heartpower Performances which sends musicians into venues with at-risk audiences such as the juvenile justice system, providing an additional 175 concerts and classes to the community annually. Her workshop “Frontiers in Outreach” given at the Chamber Music America Annual Convention in 2010, introduced these ideas to a broader international audience.
Dr. Liebowitz developed Professional Orientation for Performers (Music 515) in the early 90’s. In this seminar many aspects of arts administration are taughtincluding non-profit management, organizational budgeting, staffing, grant-writing, board development, fund-raising, contracts, marketing, website development, and press releases. In 2009, Dr. Liebowitz launched “Practicum in Community Outreach” (Music 518) to specifically train performers in the skills necessary to address at-risk audiences such as abused, foster, and homeless children and recovering homeless veterans. This work has attracted guest lecture spots on career development at universities and conservatories worldwide.
