April 2009

April 18, 2009 – AAPG BBQ at the Hering Ranch

Per tradition, the AAPG-SDSU held the AAPG semester BBQ at the Hering Ranch. The event was hosted by Kip Hering (SDSU Geology Alum) and the AAPG-SDSU. The event was capped with an award ceremony in which awards were given to Robert J. Mellors (AAPG Faculty Advisor) and Eugene “Kip” Hering (Petroleum Geology faculty) to honor their dedication and support for the 2009 SDSU-AAPG Imperial Barrel Award team and the 2008-2009 AAPG-SDSU organization. April 16, 2009 – Discussions for the future

SDSU-AAPG student chapter held a pizza party/meeting to discuss how to close out the 2008-2009 year. This meeting serves as a purpose to discuss the AAPG-SDSU's future (2009-2010 AAPG-SDSU year). The meeting was open to everyone.

 

April 3, 2009 – PetroAzteca wins second consecutive IBA Pacific section

SDSU-AAPG student chapter (Team PetroAzteca) are declared winners of the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) Pacific Regional competition, allowing them to compete in the IBA Finals in June 2009.  (Download: Championship Banner PDF) (Pictures)

 

 

February 2009

 

February 20, 2009 – OXY THUMS offshore oils facility field trip

SDSU-AAPG student chapter has organized a field trip to the THUMS facility in Long Beach, CA. This field trip is made possible due to the cooperation of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY). They are very generous in letting us tour their facility. (Oxy THUMS website) (Pictures)

 

February 2-3, 2009 – Trace fossils short course

Dr. Stephen Hasiotis (Univ. of Kansas) will teach a short course on uses of continental trace fossils in environmental and sequence stratigraphic interpretations. This short course is organized by Dr. Jared Morrow (SDSU Geology) and Dr. Stephen Hasiotis (Univ. of Kansas) in cooperation with the SDSU-AAPG student chapter. Most student chapter members will participate in the short course and SDSU-AAPG will help in providing the snacks and drinks for the duration of the course. February 2009

Congratulations to Krista Muela, recipient of the L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant for the 2008-2009 school year. The L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant is an AAPG foundation grant with the objective to support educational expenses of undergraduate geoscience students and their departments. Funding is provided through a generous endowment gift from L. Austin Weeks to the AAPG Foundation. This grant is given to a qualified undergraduate student, nominated by a local committee made of the Faculty Advisor, society liaison, student chapter President and the Department Chair.

January 30, 2009 – AAPG-SDSU officers meeting. The SDSU-AAPG Student Chapter officers will have a meeting to review the past year and discuss the update on future events that will be held.

 

December 2008

December 23, 2008 Annual AAPG-SDSU Poinsettia Bowl tailgate + game

December SDSU-AAPG Imperial Barrel Team 2009 selection. The SDSU-AAPG Student Chapter will announce its 2009 PetroAzteca team that will represent SDSU Geology in the Imperial Barrel Award. Get ‘em State! (See Banner)

 

November 2008

November 22, 2008 SDSU vs. UNLV football, AAPG-SDSU tailgate (See Picture)

November 12, 2008 The SDSU-AAPG Student Chapter will host Mike Hart, an engineering geologist and SDSU alum, to give a talk about professional careers in engineering geology and environmental geology. Mike Hart is a veteran in the engineering geology field with 30-plus years professional experience in the field. He will be joined by Sue Tanges, an SDSU geology alum who has her own geotechnical company. (See flyer for the event)

September 2008

September The SDSU-AAPG Student Chapter hosted a meet-and-greet with new geology students at the SDSU Dept. of Geological Sciences. The purpose of this event was to kick off the new AAPG-SDSU year and to introduce the organization to newcomers. The organization had the opportunity to meet new members and friends.

 

April 2008

April 18 The SDSU-AAPG team (PetroAzteca) will present their Imperial Barrel data in the Imperial Barrel Award finals competition in the AAPG Annual Meeting at San Antonio, competing with 12 other schools worldwide.

 

March 2008

March 14 The Imperial Barrel Team of SDSU-AAPG presented their results in Bakersfield, CA in front of a panel of judges and several petroleum industry experts. During this meeting the SDSU-AAPG team (PetroAzteca) was crowned as winners of the Imperial Barrel Pacific Regional competition, allowing them to compete in the nationals on April 2008. January 2008

January 20 – The Imperial Barrel Competition Team to represent the SDSU-AAPG Student   chapter is selected. The name PetroAzteca is selected as a team name, showcasing both the respect towards petroleum geology and the never ending SDSU Aztecs school spirit.
