Virtual Hosting on ROHAN

Virtual Hosting is now available on ROHAN for department and student organization accounts. For example: if you currently have a web page at URL - http://rohan.sdsu.edu/dept/infosys/index.html, an alias can be set up so that users can go to an easier URL - http://infosys.sdsu.edu.

Requesting Virtual Host Name

Set up the virtual host name via TNS Domain Name Service Registration by filling out the online Domain Name Registration Request at http://security.sdsu.edu/forms/dns_request_form.php or emailing dns@sdsu.edu with the appropriate information (see below). The virtual host name must end in .sdsu.edu and the IP address is always 130.191.3.5. NOTE: The virtual host name must be unique from any machine at SDSU. See the instructions verifying unique host name below.

Please provide the following information in your email message to dns@sdsu.edu:

Your name: (enter your name)
Your email address: (enter your email address)
Machine Name: (enter your requested host name)
IP Address: (enter 130.191.3.5)
User's name: (enter user's name, even if same as above)
User's phone: (enter user's phone number)
User's email address: (enter user's email address, even if same as above)
Department: (enter your department)
Comments: (enter the following: This is a request for a virtual host name to be used for virtual hosting on rohan.sdsu.edu.)

Verifying Unique Host Name

To verify that your requested name is unique.

  1. Telnet to ROHAN and login. From the rohan% prompt, enter:

    nslookup requestedhostname

    If the name is unique, you will receive a message that the server can't find that hostname. If the name is not unique, ROHAN will display the machine name and it's IP address.

Requesting Virtual Hosting

After submitting the DNS registration, email webmaster@rohan.sdsu.edu with a request for virtual hosting from the ROHAN account to the new host name. A return email message will be sent when virtual hosting has been set up.
