This page guides you through setting up the following secure settings on Thunderbird:
- The POP server using the alternate SSL secured port 995.
- The SMTP server with require STARTTLS on the SMTP port 8025.
- Accepting Rohan's SSL Certificate.
Start Thunderbird and click Local Folders. On the right side, below Accounts click View settings for this account. Click Server Settings to change the incoming mail settings:

This example is for an account using POP
The Server Name is rohan.sdsu.edu
The Security Settings have the SSL secure connection button checked.

- Outgoing Server (SMTP)
Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) to bring up the settings.
Click the Edit... button to bring up the SMTP Server window.
The Server Name: is rohan.sdsu.edu
The Server Port: is 8025
Under Security and Authentication, check Use name and password
Check the Use secure connection: TLS button.

- Accept Rohan's Certificate
Now send a test message to yourself. Right after you send the message, Thunderbird may pop up a window titled Website Certified by an Unknown Authority. If you see this, click the button next to Accept this certificate permanently Then click the OK button.
