signature

A signature (often called a .sig) is a file with a short bit of text that gets appended to any mail you send from your account. It typically contains basic information about yourself, such as your name and Email address. A good rule of thumb -- they are never longer than 4 lines.

Creating a signature file:
You may create it in the editor of your choice. See help on editors for more information. It is suggested that you name the file .signature, and place it in your home directory, but that is not required. A typical signature file might contain something like:

Using a signature file:
Use of a signature file depends on what program you use to send Email with. If you are using Berkeley Mail (the default when you just type mail at the Unix prompt), then you cannot use signature files. If you wish to have a signature file, then you must use one of the other mailers on the system, such as Elm or PINE.
