files
files are any source of input or target of output. They are stored in a hierarchial manner, beginning with / as the root directory of the filesystem. The major subdivisions (directories) are /home, /opt, /tmp and /usr. Your directory is probably something like /home/ma/c/myname or something similar.
System programs are under /usr. Packages like SAS and Maple are under /opt. A temporary file area is under /tmp. Files under /tmp should be deleted as soon as you are finished using them. The system will delete files in /tmp one day after they are last used or when the system boots.
