editors

There are several editors available for UNIX systems:

ed

ed is the most basic line editor of the UNIX system. Although superseded by ex(1) and vi(1) for most purposes, ed is still used by various system utilities.

emacs

GNU emacs is a new version of Emacs, written by the author of the original (PDP-10) Emacs, Richard Stallman. It is easily extensible since its editing commands are written in Lisp.

jove

jove is Jonathan's Own Version of Emacs (JOVE);an interactive display-oriented text editor. It is based on the original EMACS editor written at MIT by Richard Stallman. Although jove is meant to be compatible with Emacs, there are some major differences between the two editors and you shouldn't rely on their behaving identically. jove has a tutorial. Syntax is:

vi

vi (visual) is a display oriented text editor based on ex. ex and vi are, in fact, the same text editor; it is possible to get to the command mode of ex from within vi and vice-versa. Further assistance is available:
