apropos
To learn about a command, you can use man to display the appropriate manual page. But what if you are not sure which command to request? The solution is apropos. Apropos of is an elegant expression meaning concerning or with reference to. Usage example:
rohan% apropos manualwhere manual is the keyword. Sample output from example:
catman catman (1m) - create the cat files for the manual man man (1) - find and display reference manual pages man man (5) - macros to format Reference Manual pages mansun mansun (5) - macros to format Reference Manual pagesWhen you use apropos, UNIX searches through all the title lines of the manual pages looking for the keyword you specified. It will then tell you those commands which are found to be a match (does not distinguish between upper- and lower-case). If you can't find what you want, try asking in a different way. See also man.
