Michael Real - brief intro
Michael Real is Director in the School of Communication
at San Diego State University. He is the author of Mass-Mediated Culture,
Super Media: A Cultural Studies Approach, and other books and articles.
He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Illinois, has
directed a variety of local, national, and international research projects,
and has produced or hosted television programming on current issues and
for undeserved populations. He lives with his wife and daughter in Del
Mar, California. The focus of his work concerns media, culture, and social
responsibility.
Michael R. Real - Biographical Introduction
Michael Real's media work includes writing numerous
books and articles on media and public culture, directing local and internationl
research projects, producing or hosting issue-oriented television and radio
programming, and teaching and speaking about the role and techniques of
media in daily life.
Michael Real is the author of four books on media
and culture: Mass-Mediated Culture (Prentice-Hall, 1977), Global Ritual:
Olympic Media Coverage and International Understanding (UNESCO, 1986),
Super Media: A Cultural Studies Approach (Sage, 1989) and Exploring Media
Culture (Sage, 1996). He has published more than 30 articles in scholarly
journals and books, has presented more than 40 papers and invited lectures
on four continents, and has written various book reviews and feature articles.
His writings have been published in Critical Studies in Mass Communication,
American Quarterly, Journal of Communication, Media Development, Journalism
Quarterly, Journal of Popular Culture, International Review of Intercultural
Relations, Contemporary Sociology, Newsday, San Diego Union, Media and
Values, Michigan Sports Gazette, Unilag, Chasqui, and as chapters in more
than a dozen books. In addition to his writing, Michael Real has been part
of various creative media activities. He has initiated, as project director,
more than $350,000 worth of federal, state, and local grants to produce
TV programs and series on topics of technology and public policy, aging,
at-risk ethnic youth, global-local relations, and others. He was Executive
Producer of "Senior Scene" (a multi-year cable weekly series), "Televised
Educational Growth Opportunities" (a two-year local public television series)
"Frontiers of Reason," (a two-year cable weekly series) and "I Am Somebody"
(a 30-minute bilingual film). In the 1990s he has been host and moderator
of the local San Diego issues discussion show "Global Village" and has
served as moderator of interactive instructional teleconferences that are
received throughout Latin America. He has been involved with KPBS-TV and
KPBS-FM for various projects. He is a frequent guest expert on media issues
for television and radio news.
Michael Real is currently professor of Telecommunications
and Film at San Diego State University and was department chair from 1986
to l991. He holds a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Illinois,
an M.A. in Teaching from St. Thomas College, and a B.A. in Philosophy from
St. Paul Seminary. He served as a campus chaplain and instructor of ethics
and religion at the University of Illinois and as a professor of communication
at the University of California at San Diego before coming to San Diego
State University. His primary teaching and research interests include:
socio-cultural aspects of media, media theory and criticism, communication
research methods, film analysis, cultural studies, music and sports media,
global telecommunication, critical theory, and transnational and comparative
media culture.
