I. Raising a Flag

Imagine that you are watching a child in middle school raise a flag by pulling down the ropes.  The flag might be raised in a pattern such as the one shown in the animation.

Now imagine that you look at the high school flag that has a motorized flag.  Click “Raise the flag” to view this animation.

II. Raising a Motorized Flag

This time, a prankster added another flag and  a second motor.  First, click on “Raise Flag” to view the two motions.  Next, determine what the graphs might look like for each flag.  Finally, click “show graphs” to reveal the actual graphs..

III. Raising a Motorized Flag Really Fast

This time we have two flags again, but they are both moving at varying speeds.  Click “Raise flag” to view the motions.  Predict what each graph might look like, and then choose “Show Graph.”  Were  your predictions accurate?  NOTE: you can drag the “time” value to see the position of the two flags at any time.

IV. Raising Flags at Varying Speeds

Sorry, this page requires a Java-compatible web browser.

The flag is being raised at a constant rate.

The flag was raised quickly to begin with, and then slower as it got near the top.

The flag was raised in “jerks,” presumably as the scout pulled the rope hand over hand.

The flag was hoisted slowly at to begin with, but gradually accelerated up the pole.

The flag began rising slowly, then speeded up, and finally slowed down near the top of the pole.

Impossible!
