4 x 20 = 80

4 x 7 = 28

80 + 28 = 108

Children’s Strategies for  Multiplication

Darren

Text Box: NOTE: The important distinction here between Daniel and Darren is that Darren is separating tens and ones, which is closely aligned with the algorithm. In contrast, Daniel is chunking by using a friendly number (25), and 4 x 25 is especially “friendly.” This brings home the idea that what seems most efficient to one child may not seem most efficient to another. The important pedagogical note is that teachers should not think of one way as most efficient, and then try to impose it on learners.
