Introduction

The concept of measurement is often difficult for students to learn, and yet it is crucial for supporting the development of spatial thinking.

The goal of this activity is to review the key ideas involved in the teaching of measurement.  Four ideas are presented along with sample questions.  These are:

1. Measurement is a method for quantifying

2. Units of measure are standardized for easier recognition and communication

3. Measurements are all approximations, and the smaller unit used, the more accurate the measure

4. Measures can be added so that pieces can be measured and then totaled to obtain one total measure.

Directions:  Read each section and then answer the question that follows.
