Adding and Subtracting Imaginary Numbers


How to use this activity:

  1. Use pencil and paper to solve each exercise shown in the blue column below left.
  2. Use the dynamic graph below to represent your work graphically.  To use the graph, represent the first imaginary number by dragging the red point on the Real number line.  Then, drag the red point on the imaginary axis up and down to reach the imaginary quantity. Do the same thing to represent the second imaginary number with the green arrow.   
  3. To see a graphical representation of the sum of the numbers, click on the "Show sum and parallelogram" button.
  4. To check your work further, click on the  "Show Solution" button under each exercise to check your work. Click here to see an explanation of how to plot imaginary numbers from the lesson.
