Course Description

SPAN 696 introduces foreign language instructors and graduate students to the use of telecommunications technology for designing and delivering online pedagogical materials for instructor-led and distance courses. A primary focus of the class is on creating Web-based learning activities, lecture outlines, and academic papers. While gaining skill on instructional and web design principles, students will learn to create DHTML pages, practice a suite of JavaScript authoring programs (Half-Baked software), and learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language.

The course readings and site-evaluation procedures will provide students with a basis for researching the effectiveness of internet-based technologies for teaching and learning. The teaching-learning experience will be based on constructivist learning principles, iterative instructional design, and communicative FL teaching.

Course activities will include assigned readings, class discussions, course units planning, presentations, web site evaluation, hands on labs, and the development of a web-based project. An HTML editor, a suite of JavaScript authoring applications (Half-Baked software), and a JavaScript tutorial will be used for the hands on exercises and the development of the final projects.

Prerequisite: Basic Windows 98 or Macintosh file management skills, basic knowledge and skill using Web brrowsers, familiarity with communication tools (e-mail, Chat, etc.), and basic knowledge of a Web editor such as Adobe PageMill or Claris HomePage.

Number of participants: Limited to 20
