RE 503 - Internet for Teachers

Mount Anthony Middle School

Project: 7 Red Team

Subject(s):

We will address the English, math, science, and social studies areas of our team project - searching for and acquiring information about - famous individuals (bibliographies).

Grade Level(s):

This project includes all of our seventh grade team members.

Number of participants:

There are four teachers and approximately 90 students involved.

Summary:

Each of our students will independently learn to activate, manipulate, and access information from a computer connected to the Internet. They will use this information to support projects associated with acquiring background information about important individuals in history.

Goal(s):

Students will learn to activate the computer...open a search engine...enter necessary information...select the pertinent information... and print what is necessary to support their search.

Objectives:

The objective we plan for this project is the following: Students will become comfortable using the computer as a tool to research information. They will learn to use an Internet browser such as Netscape.

Rationale

There is a vast amount of information on the Internet. We think that the students should learn how to assimilate the information and select what is useful to them.

Procedure:

Students will work in small groups or on their own. The time frames will vary depending upon the students' abilities and comfort levels with the computer as a tool. Students will practice using search engines, practice going back and forth between "screens" using Netscape as a browser, and finally, students will take written tests as well as practicums (return demonstrations). The event will culminate with students finding information about a famous person, using the Internet as the primary source.

Assessment:

Students will have already taken tests and actually done successful searches using the computer and the Internet. A final assessment will be the students' actual presentations to their classmates --they will present information gathered from their searches.
