Project: Spanish Proficiency Exercises
Subject:
Spanish language learning
Grade Levels:
Grades 6-12
Number of participants:
Thirty students
Summary:
Ten activities or situations will be given in English. The student(s) will interpret each situation and select the correct response(s) in Spanish. The directions for each situation are given in English.
Goals:
To provide practice examples in reading and writing pathways for proficiency in Spanish.
Objectives:
To reinforce previously learned vocabulary and familiarize the student(s) with situations which might be found on a Spanish proficiency exam.
Rationale
Each year every 8th grade student that is enrolled in Spanish in our school is required to take the state entry level proficiency exam in Spanish. Students who receive a passing score of 65% or higher will receive credit for Spanish I and will be allowed to enroll in Spanish II. Proficiency exams are difficult and they primarily test one's communicative skills in the target language. The questions on the proficiency exam are open-ended and permit students to use what they know to receive or communicate a message. The exercises in this lesson are intended to provide additional practice for those students who will be taking a proficiency exam.
Procedure:
The lesson can be completed individually or in groups. The time needed to complete this lesson should be approximately 30 minutes. It will be easy for each student to assess his/her performance, since there are ten situations. The teacher should visit each computer and check the progress of the students to accurately evaluate their success with this lesson.
Assessment:
The answers to each of the ten situations are provided in the lesson. Students' performance in the lesson will be determined by the number of correct and incorrect responses. Potential modifications of the content and/or design of the lesson will take into account the opinions expressed by the students in the evaluation form.
