Course Objectives

After completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. use the major Internet tools for K-12 teaching and research;
  2. evaluate the quality/effectiveness of Internet educational sites and materials; and
  3. author basic educational web projects

Course Description

Participants will accomplish work on the various areas of the course. They will first practice with the various Internet tools including e-mail, listserv, Telnet, Gopher, and the World Wide Web (WWW). Next, they will gain experience using searching tools (Usenet) and File Tranfer Protocol (FTP) commands to manage files. Right after, participants will gain skill in evaluating WWW sites, using existing evaluation forms and developing their own ones. They will then explore ICR (Internet Relay Chat) tools and video conferencing tools. Finally, participants will address the basics of WWW courseware writing: to create their own Web materials, participants will learn site design principles, image file conversion, and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

Evaluation Procedures

 

Students' work
Participants will be required to complete seven assignments and a final project. Assignments and project are aimed at: 1) assessing participants' mastery of the concepts/tools taught in the course; and 2) verifying participants' ability to apply their newly acquired knowledge to a specific pedagogical situation. The assignments will be sent weekly to the instructor via e-mail. The final projects will be assessed following the instructor's criteria and the evaluation forms developed by the students.

On-line Courseware
At the end of the course, students will be asked to fill in a Student's Feedback Form to evaluate the web courseware created for this class.
