FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a set of standard instructions that allow information to be transmitted form one computer to another on a network. Users generally employ a client program, such as Fetch or Anarchie, to gain access to an FTP server that holds a great deal of information they can download, such as software or archives of mailing lists.

Anonymous FTP sites, are servers which offer free access to their files. One don't have to be an official user of the server's system but can log in anonymously using a program like Fetch.

Using Fetch

Fetch is an FTP client program created at Dartmouth College. To use Fetch double-click its logo and type the name of a FTP site in the Host box. Next, if the FTP site you chose is an anonymous one, you leave the word "anonymous" into the User ID box. After that, you may enter your e-mail address in the Password box, or leave it blank.

You should see a window like this one:

After clicking in "OK," and once in the FTP site, you may choose one of the two buttons, either Put File or Get File, to move what you want into the site or into your computer.
