With my sons Stephen and Nicholas in Spain, Summer 1996
Just what is a family these days? We're born into one family, often create another,
but we live in an age of divorce and are still in the dark about what happens
when a family fragments. My own sense of it is that we carry a family with us
in our psyches and that family shifts as life progresses. I've begun to explore
this subject in a series of essays with the overall title, "The Family I Carry
With Me." Here are a few of its members and a bit about them.
