Discussion Questions for April 16, 2003:

1) The Post article opens with two environmental scenarios faced by managers. Have you ever been in a situation, or know of someone who has, where you had to decide between the environment and another priority?

2) Do you see being an environmentalist as being a political choice and way of life? Should a company be required to disclose “ingredients” for their products in terms of an amount of earth’s resources consumed?

3) What is something you eat, drink, use now that you would not be surprised to find out in the future that it is/was hazardous to your health or the environment?

4) Would you be willing to pay more for a competing product based on the company’s efforts towards social responsibility? Does environmental practice and policy for a company have an impact on your purchasing decisions?

5) Bucholz presents that "by hiring the best qualified person for a job opening, business was helping to perpetuate the effects of discrimination against minorites and women". Should America hire people based on their race, creed or sex in order to change the demographics of the corporate board room or should they only hire the best qualified person?

6) In "Managing with Integrity", Watson asserts that business "does not particularly like being told by outsiders what business's responsibilities are". What role should the government and political action groups have in regulating/guiding business?

7) Given the culture post stock market boom to cut costs, do you think it is likely that companies such as New Brunswick would make the same decision to put a plant in a more expensive location to help a dying town?

8) Watson contends that "private enterprise does have a role in addressing social problems". What is your opinion of that role?
