Discussion Questions for March 26, 1998:

The Worldly Philosophers

Facilitated by: Nicolas O.

1. Can a philosophical or idealistic life be reconciled with the practical life?

2> Is the world of practical affairs inextricably linked with the world of political, social, and religious life? In what ways are these spheres of existence interdependent? Independent?

3. What is more important in our society: to have material things, or spiritual achievements? What should be more important? Are the two mutually exclusive?

4. Are we educated to believe that the individual is an acquisitive creature...or are we simply acquisitive by nature? How can this debate be resolved?

5. Is the market system merely a means of exchanging goods? Or, as Heilbronner claims, is it also a mechanism for sustaining and maintaining an entire society?

6. Do you think that a market system, per se, can make people happy in our society?

7. Must the state intervene in the economy, or rather is it the law of supply and demand the should reign supreme?
