ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS QUESTIONS

ARTICLE 17

1) In what ways do environmental groups affect public awareness regarding environmental issues? What tools do they have at their disposal? How does that awareness translate into consumer behavior? Demand? Does that public perception affect business strategies? How?

2) In the past many corporations have had adversarial relationships with environmental groups. How would this affect a subsequent business strategy? In doing a SWOT analysis, how would a strategy change if environmental concerns and groups were viewed as an opportunity versus a threat?

3) What responsibility, if any, do corporations have when environmental protests are raised? What is the basis for this responsibility? Should they go on with business as usual, or are they missing an opportunity to create a "win-win" situation?

4) Are the more radical extremist groups creating a "bad-rap" for all the environmentalists? Why or why not? Is this type of publicity what the environment needs?

ARTICLE 18

5) Can ecosabotage be given a consequential justification? How? Have any ecosaboteurs effectively demonstrated this line of reasoning?

6) Martin discusses the act of ecosabotage as a possible parallel to the underground railroad. What was the justification? Agree or disagree?
"There is no a priori reason to suppose that ecosaboteurs have less personal integrity than the managers of the underground railroad or that they consider their cause less morally significant than the managers of the underground railroad considered theirs."
