Discussion Questions for 11 November 2002


1) According to Welford and Starkey, the focus of companies employing Life-Cycle Design should be on the product rather than the production process.

-Do you agree with this theory?

-Could this limit growth and innovation within a company?

2) Why aren’t more businesses using Life-Cycle Assessment when developing products? What are some pros and cons businesses must consider?

3) In the movie “Borderline Case” we see that many companies are moving their operations outside the United States. What factors are encouraging companies to make this move into Mexico and other international locales?

4) Currently, many companies are discouraged from making changes to help protect the environment and promote sustainability. What factors would encourage businesses to practice LCD and LCA?

5) Some industries are better suited to change than others. What industries are in a better position to adopt LCA?

6) Change within a company always poses a major challenge. Implementing LCA would require making changes throughout the entire organization. As a manager, how do you successfully make the shift to LCA? What would be the major challenges associated with the adjustment?
