Discussion Questions for October 26, 1999:

1) Are humans a part of nature? If so, can all of our acts be considered natural acts?

2) Aldo Leopold suggests that "all ethics so far evolved rests on a single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of independent parts." How do you think community should be defined? Does it include only human beings?

3) Does nature have 'intrinsic value' or is it just here to benefit humans?

4) Kantian philosophy tells us we ought not to treat others as simply a means to an end. Does this include nature, or should we be able to use nature as a means to an end?

5) Does 'nature' have rights? Even it does not have rights, can it still have "intrinsic value"?

6) Do we as humans have moral duties to nature and its preservation?

7) Do companies have a moral obligation to protect the natural environment?

8) Are businesses responsible for doing all they can to limit their impact on the environment, or just what is legally required, even if the laws are believed to be inadequate?

9) In light of the Valdez accident, what ought to be done to prevent future accidents? Should society be willing to pay for that kind of preventative maintenance? Would we?

10) Does human prosperity and economics determine how we should use/treat nature? Or is it the other way around?

11) Is the environmentalist's goal to protect nature not for man, but rather from man?
