Discussion Questions for August 07, 2003:

8.2 Emerging Macro-Ethical Issues: Weiss
1) What are the benefits that can be gained from using genetically engineered crops? What are the ethical dilemmas? Explain the ethical theory that applies for each side.
2) What are the benefits that can be gained from stem cell research? What are the ethical dilemmas for stem cell research? Explain the ethical theory that applies for each side.
3) In what ways are these two issues the same? In what ways are they different? How do these issues affect business?

Issue 19: “Do Environmental Restrictions Violate Basic Economic Freedoms?”: Newton & Ford
4) What type of environmental problems do you feel deserve the most priority? (Global or National or State-wide or Countywide or locally?) How would you prioritize which are the most pressing issues? Did you take a utilitarian perspective or deontological in making your decision?
5) Do you feel there is an environmental crisis? Has is been blown out of proportion? Should there by less environmental restrictions and more economic freedoms?

5.5 Corporate Responsibility and the Environment: Weiss
6) Should we use up the resources that we need now, and let future generations adapt and evolve to a different, possibly harsher, environment? Or should we preserve our natural resources, and habitats for future generations to share and enjoy? Why?
7) Is the ‘prisoner’s dilemma’ (Dienhart, pg. 200) an inevitable course for environmental responsibility in corporations, to which only governmental regulation is the answer?
8) Eight million people may die from air pollution in the next 20 years. Does government have the right to force auto companies to spend more money on fuel-efficient technology? Or does this encroach on companies’ rights to take advantage of consumers’ desires for large inefficient vehicles.

Issue 18: Should We Encourage International Trade in Tobacco Products?: Newton & Ford
9) Is the overall risk of tobacco too great and should developing countries be made to suffer economically due to this risk?
10) What limitations should be imposed, if any, on tobacco companies with regard to advertising (i.e. next to schools, playgrounds, churches?)

Additional Questions
11) Would you agree that high fuel-consumption vehicles are causing an increase in America's dependence on foreign oil? Do you think that some of the money we spend on Middle Eastern oil may be helping to fund terrorists?
12) Do you consider global warming to be a real threat? If yes, what do you see as some of the future consequences of global warming? Do you believe that more fuel-efficient cars could have a stabilizing effect?
