Discussion Questions for June 12, 2002:

1) Identify your workforce values.

2) Identify ways to deal with reverse mentoring.

3) You were recently counseled at work for something that was not your fault. You try to argue with your supervisor, but he refuses to listen. You are very angry that you were written up, but no one will hear your side of the story. A few days later, you trip over a stool that someone left in the pathway. You fall on your knee, and a coworker comes to help you up. Your knee somewhat hurts, but you know it is not injured enough to go to the doctor. Your supervisor makes you fill out an incident report and asks you if you need medical attention and would like to file for Workers’ Compensation Benefits. Do you decline because you know you are not very injured, or do you agree as retribution for your counseling statement, knowing that it will cost your employer a lot of money?

4) What can be done about the problem of unjust dismissals?

5) You are a graduate student at SDSU and you work full time. Between class and work, you never seem to have enough time to complete your school assignments. Do you use work time to complete class projects?

6) You are a medical doctor that works for a pharmaceutical company. Your company threatens to fire you if you do not manipulate the data to suit your employer. Do you risk losing your medical license or let your company fire you?

7) What can be done about employers who discriminate on the basis of employees’ lifestyles?

8) You are a Human Resources Staffing Specialist for a large profitable company. There is an internal promotion available and you have two qualified candidates. One candidate is a white male who is a good friend and has worked for the company for over 10 years and has aided in its success from its founding. The other candidate is a Hispanic female who has only been with the company for a year and a half. Both candidates are equally qualified, but your company has an affirmative action policy. Which candidate do hire?

9) You are a high-ranking executive of a large, well-known business. It has come to your attention that one of your peers has been overcharging several clients. Do you tell these clients about the overcharging and risk serious implications from the public and media view of your company, or do you fix the problem internally, hoping that your clients and the public will never find out?
