Project Overview
It is my intention to take the hard goods from the Marriott Hotel's
redecoration project, and have its management donate their goods to the
UCSD Social Work department.
The Marriott Hotel
This Marriott Hotel is owned by Starwood Lodges. It owns and
operates five hotels in the region. The normal operating procedure for
a hotel retrofitting of new decor would involve the management team and
an auction company. The company would bid on the sofas, mirrors,
bedspreads, curtains, television sets, etc. The money from the auction
house would then be put into a general fund, and drawn upon at
management,s discretion.
I have communicated with the Human Resources department about this
redecoration that will occur in November of this year. The manager of
the department is setting up an appointment with the General Manager who
will either OK or dismiss the project.
The Marriott will gain community goodwill. It is my hope to get
local news coverage, and make the program a feather in the cap of
Marriott.
UCSD Medical Center
The first worry I had was whether or not this was a non-profit
organization. The Social Work manager I spoke to assured me that their
Adopt-A-Family program certainly is just that. It is a program that has
been around for five years with varied success. It needs a strong
corporate partner. The program last year aided nearly 40 families with
their poverty problems. This program gives needy families "whatever
they need."
My Goal
It is my fervent goal to create a partnership between these two companies. The hotel, with proper news coverage, and perhaps some other media "advertising" should be persuaded to go with the project. They would nearly quintuple the efforts of UCSD's Adopt-A-Family. With the proper handling, maybe when the other four Hotels redecorate, they too in turn will help
Adopt-A-Family.
