Verna ThomasOur project was to benefit Mama's Kitchen, a not-for-profit organization that delivers meals to approximately 300 people with AIDS throughout the City and County of San Diego. The organization provides a hot meal every weekday, plus a bag of groceries on Friday for the weekend. These meals are prepared and delivered by volunteers in the early evening.
On Friday, February 21st, all five of us went to Mama's Kitchen for a tour of the place and to go on a ride-along with some of the volunteers that deliver the meals. Stephanie Edwards, the Development Director, gave us a tour of Mama's Kitchen, provided information on the organization, and answered our questions. After this, we went with some volunteers to deliver the hot meals for the day plus the bags of groceries for the weekend. For each one of us the ride-along was a unique experience because some of us had never known a person with AIDS.
We conducted two food drives and received some monetary donations also. The first drive was conducted at the Symphony Towers, where D'Andrea works, from March 31st to April 11th. D'Andrea distributed flyers throughout the building and was able to get $145 in monetary donations plus some boxes of canned and dry goods.
For the second food drive, we posted some flyers on Campus advertising the drive. A press release was sent out to all TV and radio stations as well. This food drive took place at the new Ralphs on Montezuma Road on Sunday, April 20th. We were there from 10am to 2:30pm. We handed out about 300 flyers at the entrance to customers asking for food donations. The response was very good. We were able to collect a lot of canned and dry goods as well as an additional $45 in cash and checks.
Ralphs' managers were glad to help us out. It is not normal for supermarket stores to help in this way but because at this store they were celebrating their grand opening, they were willing to assist us with the food drive. All of the donors were very happy to help us too. Some wanted more information about Mama's Kitchen which we were glad to give. Others were very willing to give because they've had a relative who died of AIDS or knew someone infected with the virus. We noticed that some donors bought more groceries to donate than for themselves. Those with children had the children hand us the donations.
On April 22nd, we delivered the food and the money to Mama's Kitchen. They were very pleased with our work. We delivered approximately eight boxes full of canned and dry goods and $190 in cash and checks.
In addition, Solar Turbines has agreed to make an annual contribution to Mama's Kitchen as a result of our solicitation. We hope this will result in a long term relationship between the two parties.
We feel our project was successful. Although Mama's Kitchen needs thousands of dollars and large amounts of food to stay in operation, the contribution that we made will make a difference for those people receiving the meals.
During our presentation we will discuss the moral and ethical frameworks that applied to our project. We'll also give more details on the social change project.
