GROUP MEMBERS:Paul CooperEXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Kipp SnowWe began our social change project by incorporating a utilitarian perspective. In order to achieve this, we attempted to target a worldwide corporation based in San Diego. We decided to implement a paper recycling program at Jenny Craig International, which is based in Carlsbad, California. Jenny Craig International consists of over 1500 branch offices around the world.
We had difficulty convincing the corporate office in Carlsbad of the need for our social change project. All of the bureaucratic red tape prevented us from communicating efficiently with anyone at the corporate office. Therefore, we took initiative and began our program at a local branch in Point Loma. At the Point Loma branch we found success with our ideas. We had a meeting with the branch director. The outcome of the meeting outlined our strategy for the project and revealed its operations to the rest of the staff. On a weekly basis, or as otherwise needed, we empty our recycling bins, which are conveniently placed next to their trash cans.
We have recycled hundreds of pounds of paper from the Jenny Craig Point Loma branch. From day one, we were inundated with paper. Not only were our recycling bins filling, but we also discovered other sources of wasted paper that would have otherwise been headed for the landfills. We scheduled Mondays as our regular pick up day. However, we called periodically throughout the week to see if our services were needed any additional days. In fact they were. Our bins were filling quicker than expected. Our frequent visits enabled us to get to know many of the employees at the Point Loma branch. We began to build a healthy relationship with the staff, which was based on the common goal of bettering our environment.
Our next step was to attempt to continue the recycling program once we are no longer involved. By doing this, we must establish a relationship between a local recycling company and Jenny Craig. As of June 1, 1997, it will be the recycling company's responsibility to regularly pick up the paper. Once Jenny Craig becomes a routine stop on the recycling company's route, our goal will be met and our paper recycling project at the Point Loma branch will operate efficiently without us.
Since we have proven that a paper recycling program can be successfully implemented at a local Jenny Craig branch, we feel that we are capable of convincing the corporate headquarters that such a program can be easily put into action in other branches. We have made a contact at the corporate office and are confident that our project will be pursued at corporate level.
Our experiences throughout this entire project have proven to be educational and beneficial. We have realized that many companies do not recycle and programs such as ours should be more widely used. Personally, we have gained a consciousness of the need to recycle paper. Hopefully this consciousness will cascade to others in both our corporate and personal lives.
