Barry WaitsFeeding the animals at the San Diego Humane Society was our number one objective. As our group began we realized that society was misinformed as to the services the Humane Society provided. As a result our number two objective was to create public awareness about the Humane Society and their main purpose.
We worked closely with the management of Vons Grocery Stores located at 3550 Murphy Canyon Road in San Diego to allow us to set up an information booth along with a food donation location at this store. We even decided to take the project to higher level when we committed to collecting not only the food, but the proofs of purchase from Heinz Pet Products.
Ethical and Social Reasons:
The San Diego Humane Society is looking out for the good of all animals. Since they are fully funded by private funds rather than a government supported venture, it is important for society to recognize their intent and to help feed the sheltered animals. Our group informed the public as to the Humane Society's needs. Throughout our collection process, all aspects of our project achieved the best possible outcome for everyone involved. The Humane Society benefitted from our group's food donations. They can use our donation of food to feed sheltered animals for some time to come. We estimated that with our food donations alone, we could feed approximately fifty cats and twenty-dogs for a number of months. All of the product labels that our group turned into the San Diego Humane Society will be cycled back to Heinz Pet Products for cash donated back to the shelter. These labels will not only give money back to the San Diego Humane Society but will also provide the shelter with national publicity. Vons benefitted from our group project because as we spoke with customers of the store we reminded them to purchase the food while they were inside the store. Vons gained revenue. Our group gained because we now know more about the Humane Society and how it functions. We know now what it takes to make a major function run as smoothly as possible. Every member of our group is an animal lover and we feel strongly toward helping he animals that are currently at the shelter receiving care.
Achievements:
Our original goals and objectives were to collect two-hundred pounds of cat and dog food, and one-hundred and fifty Heinz Pet Product labels. We not only met and surpassed our original goals by collecting two-hundred and thirty-four pounds of food but three hundred and fifty-five labels. We also decided to obtain literature form the Humane Society that explains to the public how they can donate labels and or food on an on-going basis. This way our long-term goals were met and exceeded as well as our short-term goals. We see our project as being a win-win-win situation because the Humane Society won with donations, Vons won because of gained revenue, and we won because we have worked together top achieve a common goal for the good of all animals.
