EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Goal: In our effort to create a social change among San Diego State's students, our group organized two blood drives to be held on San Diego State's campus. Our goal was to bring a change in San Diego States student's attitudes towards the importance and social significance of donating blood. There are many health aspects that can limit individuals from participating in a blood drive. We felt that in order to succeed with our change project, we needed to supply health information for the students. We felt the perfect opportunity to supply the appropriate information for our focus group was to coincide our first blood drive along with the Student Health Advisory Board's annual Health Fair, "Celebrate Health."

Preparation: Our group contacted San Diego's Blood Bank and arranged to have our first drive on April 1st, the day of the Health Fair. Next, we contacted the Student Health Advisory Board and purposed our idea. It was accepted with great enthusiasm and our group was invited to sit in on the Health Fair's preparation meetings held every Wed, at 10 a.m. We volunteered to run the Health Fair's information booth on the day of the fair. This allowed us to hand out flyers and information in regards to the blood drive and direct participants to the blood drive location.

In addition, our project entailed the setting up, running, clean up, and promoting of the actual blood drive, as well as constant communication with the blood drive coordinators. Our group wrote and released a news brief to local news stations and newspapers explaining the blood drive and health fair. We also contacted local radio stations and informed the stations of the upcoming events.

Blood Facts: During the first blood drive our group sponsored, San Diego's Blood Bank collected thirty nine pints of blood, a new record for this location. The blood bank saw a total of 85 individuals. However, various individuals could not donate due to time constraints and or medical reasons.

Future Hopes: Our group felt to continue to promote a social change among San Diego State's students with regards to donating blood, we needed to sponsor another blood drive. Our next blood drive will be held on May 1st. We feel we touched many individuals who were unsure or due to other short term medical issues, could not donate at the first dirve. Another blood drive will give these individuals a chance to donate blood and prove our group definitely believes in the cause. We are hoping for at least 50 pints of blood.
