EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

We chose to do a blood drive for our social change project. There was a common concern between all the group members that there was a great need for blood in our community. Some of us had experienced the need for blood in our own personal lives through our families and friends, and had also been made aware of the low supplies at the blood bank through the media, etc. The benefits that would arise from a blood drive would greatly outweigh the time and effort that would be invested by the group members.

David contacted his former employer at Banana Video and expressed his interest in doing a blood drive at that location since they had held blood drives there in the past. The owner was more than happy to help us with our blood drive and gave David the go ahead. Next, we contacted the San Diego Blood Bank and informed them of our intentions, as you might have guessed, they were overjoyed by our proposal and immediately gave us some dates that we could discuss with Banana Video. The decision was finally made to hold the blood drive on Friday, March 28, 1997 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Next, we went out in the streets to find sponsors for our Blood Drive. Since the blood drive was going to be held in La Mesa, we stayed in that area of the community. Some of the following items were graciously donated by the following businesses:

· Free " 2 for 1" Movie Rental & Various Drawings @ Banana Video
· 20 % off all Jewelry purchases @ Baltimore Jewelers
· Free Consultation & Initial Exam @ Vision Chiropractic
· 10% off Combination plates @ Panda King
· Free Slice of pie @ Baker's Square
· San Diego Blood Bank T-shirt for all Donors
There were many more businesses who donated, too many to mention but a special thanks to all of them for their support of our blood drive.

In order to promote our blood drive, we hit the streets and passed out copies of the flyer that the blood bank provided us. We walked around La Mesa and passed them out to people on the streets, left them on their cars and placed them on signs and poles around the city. We also distributed flyers in our jobs, Anthony gave them to his customers at the Good Guys; Carolynn to her customers at Bank of America; and Negin gave them to people attending the various events at the Sports Arena where she works.

The day had arrived and we were ready to get going. The blood drive was set to start at 3:00 p.m. but, before we even started, there was a line forming for people wanting to donate. We couldn't believe it but, were glad to see so much interest from the community. Our goal in mind was to beat last year's record of 42 donations. Approximately 60 people tried to donate with 45 actually being able to donate and some promised to donate at a later time at the Blood Bank. In our minds and in the minds of the people at the Blood Bank, our drive was a huge success. We beat last year's record and received 45 pints of blood which could eventually save up to 135 people. Also, due to the success of the blood drive, Banana Video and the Blood Bank have agreed to have a blood drive there more often in conjunction with each other.

During this semester we have encountered many different moral frameworks and we determined that with our social change project we had exhibited, deontology, our actions were morally right, independent of their consequences; utilitarianism, we had done the greatest good for the greatest number of people that we could reach; and the Social Contract Theory, which states that morality consists in the set of rules, governing how people are to treat one another, that rational people will agree to accept, for their mutual benefit, on the condition that others will follow these rules as well. Overall, we hope that we have made people aware of the importance of giving blood and the great need for it. It could save someone's life one day, and that life could very well be your own.
