EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The SDSU SafeRide program is a service created to provide a safe ride home. This free service will be provided to all eligible SDSU students who are need of an alternative for drunk driving or a way out of an unfavorable situation. The areas covered by this service would include Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Bay area, Downtown, and areas 10-15 miles north and south of the 8 freeway with the State campus as a boundary. The service will be available from 9pm to 3am, Friday and Saturday during the academic semester. Students who call the service before 2:30am are guaranteed a safe ride home. Each student is entitled to one, one-way ride per night. Each student will have the option of choosing to use the SafeRide program when registering for classes. If the student signs up for the program, a SafeRide sticker would be added to the student I.D. along with a valid registration sticker for the current semester. A new sticker will be provided for each semester, and each student must have a SafeRide sticker. Those who do not have a sticker will not be permitted to use the service, but in the future we hope to change this so non-registered students can take part in the program by paying a reduced fare similar to that of a regular taxi ride.

Ethical Framework
Deontology: Actions are morally right or wrong independent of their consequences. It would be morally wrong to drive home after having too much to drink or if you don't feel comfortable driving. This could lead to the death of both you and others. The SafeRide program seeks to end this dilemma by provided a safe ride home.
Utilitarianism: Greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people. A campus program that prevents students from driving in an unsafe situation would benefit all students who take part.
Libertarianism: Maximizing the capacity for free, informed personal choice. The SafeRide program provides an opportunity of getting home safely. This expands the student's choices of whether or not to drive while drunk or how they would get out of an unfavorable situation.
Ethic of Care: Recognize and take seriously the moral worth of relationships. A good relationship between school officials and the student is important. A program that provides a safe ride home would show that the school recognizes the moral worth of the students.

The SDSU SafeRide program is currently under consideration by the Associated Students. We have presented the program to the Vice President of Finance and he has shown support by trying to get the Housing Committee and A.S. to help with the funding. If this program is passed, we feel that it would greatly reduce the number of drunk driving incidents and situations that may feel unfavorable.
