EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Coming up with an idea for a social contract was not hard. Our first thoughts were to do something that would benefit the environment. From this idea we decided on performing a community clean up in the Golden Hills area. The reason we chose this community was due to the amount of cleaning that was needed to be performed. When we first researched the area we found a multitude of areas that needed to be cleaned. With these areas in mind we went to the CDC to obtain approval. At the CDC we were informed by Arlene Hamlin about the idea of the community garden and how no one was taking the initiative to start it. Hearing this we volunteered to start making arrangements to start the implementation of Golden Hills first community garden. Our overall goal was to introduce a program to help youth and residents establish and operate a productive and profitable community garden. This project would help families save money by bringing home food grown in the garden or allow them to sell the food for a profit. This project is also geared towards the children. It helps them do something productive during critical hours and also produces an outcome that benefits their families.

With the community garden we will be applying a multitude of theories (ex. Land ethic theory, ethic of care, utilitarism, etc.). In the beginning of the project we had meetings at the CDC and at the garden site. This provided us with ample time to plan, plot and strategize. Doing the month span of meetings, community leaders and organizations made commitments to help us reach our goal of implementing the garden.

November the 13 was our first day of cleaning. On this day we cleaned the whole lot and bagged a majority of the weeds and all the trash. To start the day off we had danish and juice for our early morning energy. After eating we passed out tools and let everyone pick a spot to start removing trash and weeds. Doing the clean up, many members of the community asked what we were doing and how long would it take before they could actually plant something. This was very exciting since the immediate community will be using the garden the most. Through out the day we played around and challenged the kids to hold their interest. We also had a Bar-B-Q which kept the kids feed and kept their energy going in the right direction. The clean up lasted for around 7 hours. All trash was disposed of and picked up by Lamar Sanitation.

On December 11 we plan to have big machinery come out to till up the land. This will help remove all the access rocks and hard ground. After completing this, the soil will be imported and laid out to begin the final stages of the community garden. Full implementation will be achieved by the beginning of Spring 2000 and signs of the gardens first crop should be producing by summer 2000. This will be a great benefit to all community members of Golden Hills.
