EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Our mission was to implement a social change project in conjunction with Toys R Us to donate toys and instructional material to abused children at the South Bay Home Support Project. As a group we were able to recognize some of the issues and assess some of the needs at the center. The center is funded by the county at a minimum and many items are unavailable to the children. Therefore, if we could help provide some toys and instructional material, the children would look forward to come to the sessions rather than feel isolated and left alone.

Classes taught at the center are provided to prevent the continuance of behavioral disorder, which is carried down from generation to generation. The sessions are beneficial to the families, because each class session is focused individually on the parents/childrens group. These sessions focus on developing self-esteem, listening skills, and self awareness through interacting with others. It also enables them to contend with difficulties and handle stress and anger.

The reason why our group chose to focus on this program was a desire to inform and educate our fellow students as to the importance of the issue of child abuse. We were actively involved with the center and became fully aware of the strains that the children had to endure. We want to express our commitment and support by setting aside time to volunteer at the center. By doing so, we hope to gain insight as to this different aspect of society. By educating others, hopefully it will open their eyes and help them understand the importance of the issues involved.

SBHSP provides the opportunity for involvement that is necessary for the preservation of the children. The community itself has moral value within which it holds individuals with needs. Those who donate time may understand these needs and may feel the desire to help fulfill them through their contribution.

As individuals, we are characterized by our caring relationships. One of these relationships is with our community. Relationships give meaning to our lives and therefore motivates us to give to and to help others. Many of us recognize and take seriously the moral worth of relationships, particulary those characterized by caring. This follows the Theory of Rational Accounts of Moral Reasoning. Donating through time or material possessions expresses a desire to help others in need.

The Toys R Us corporation had their board meeting on November 5. Therefore, we turned toward other options to fulfill our commitment to the children. We presented our proposal to set up a toy drive with the community director at Union Bank. The director was very responsive and supportive and within a week locations were coordinated for donation drop-offs. We were able to stimulate donations from the City Heights community and will drop off the items at the center at a future date before the holiday season.

We felt that our project was fairly successful, although a slight change was made in regards to the different corporations. We had a goal to donate toys to the children and we accomplished it with the help of Union Bank. We are still anticipating response that Toys R Us will contact us or ChildrenŐs Hospital. If donations are made, it will double the contribution to the center. Through this project, we have become more aware of the fundamental programs that the center provides and have realized that a small effort can produce a large outcome. We hope through educating others, they will be committed to donate their time in the future.
