Richelle StumpFrom November 20 to December 20, our group joined hands with the San Diego Food Bank. With the holidays approaching, we felt that an ideal social change program would be for us to help those less fortunate in San Diego. We recognized how beneficial one could be to the homeless over the holidays.
Being volunteers for the Food Bank, we contributed our time in many ways. Our project has many steps that all together benefit a lot of people. First, we contacted the San Diego Food Bank and found out the specifics for the KFMB Holiday Food Drive. We were then ready to go out into the community and find businesses who wanted to contribute to their social responsibility. Next, we negotiated with participating businesses for any incentives which could be offered to donators. After delivering boxes to these businesses, we wanted to show our appreciation and increase our productivity through advertising. To monitor the program success, we are making weekly pick-ups and deliveries to the Food Bank.
The companies contributing to our project are Pick Up Stix Chinese Cuisine, Moondoggies in La Jolla, Milo's Pizzeria, EZ-J's, Western Financial Capital and Kappa Delta Sorority. Pick Up Stix in all San Diego locations are rewarding those donating canned food by offering a free half order of egg rolls. Moondoggies in La Jolla is offering 20% off and Milo's Pizzeria in the college area is offering 10% off food items for any donations. We advertised these incentives by distributing flyers in these business areas and at SDSU.
Our group looked into many different ethical frameworks before and during the food drive. Studying Rachel's book and other supplementary literature, we discovered how effective our social change program is. In the last three weeks we all have seen how much change just four people can make in the lives of many just by showing their own social responsibility. The satisfaction achieved by volunteering has made us all want to continue with our giving efforts throughout the year. We hope that our feelings can be mutually felt by all the participating companies and that they also will continue with their social responsibility throughout the year as well.
