Blood Drive

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Our group decided that holding a Blood Drive here on campus would benefit the most people. We felt that not only did the blood donors help the recipients by giving blood, but they helped themselves by doing a "good deed". Once we had decided to have a blood drive, the real work began.

The first order of business was to contact the San Diego Blood Bank. When we contacted them, they were able to give us three dates that were available for the Blood Mobile to come to San Diego State University. We then talked to Sigma Iota Epsilon and they decided to help us with the Blood Drive. They reserved the Back Door in the Aztec Center for Monday the 18th of November.

The San Diego Blood Bank provided posters and flyers pre-printed for our event. We handed out the flyers and hung posters and flyers around campus. We made our own signs to advertise for our sponsors. We hung these up at the Blood Drive. We also wrote our sponsors names on the pre-printed posters before we hung them around campus. At this point, the San Diego Blood Bank told us that we needed to have 44 people signed up for the Blood Drive. So our group asked people to come and give blood for our project. In the end, we had 43 people sign-up to donate blood plus our group members.

The most challenging aspect of our Blood Drive was getting the sponsors. We first brainstormed all the places we could think of that might be willing to donate for our Blood Drive. Then we went to these places in person, and talked to staff and managers about donating. In some cases, such as Ben and Jerry's, we had to write a letter to the corporate office. By the time we had asked everyone on our list, we had five really great sponsors; Mrs. Field's Cookies, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, Paradise Bakery, Sigma Iota Epsilon and Cinnabon. Including the T-shirts and snacks provided by the Blood Mobile, we were well prepared in the refreshment department. We received many compliments from the donors, as well as the Blood Mobile staff.

On the day of our Blood Drive, our group arrived at 7:30 am to begin to set up the Back Door as a blood donating hot spot on campus. By 9:00 am our appointments had begun to show up. The day was off to a successful start. Although not all of our appointments showed up, maybe only 60%, we had walk-in donors to fill the empty time slots.

Unfortunately, many (25) people were turned away because of low iron, high cholesterol, medication, or sickness (flu, colds, etc.). We received 17 pints of blood during the Blood Drive, and numerous assurances that the ones who were turned away would go donate blood at a later time. The one part that we were very excited about as an added bonus was the Bone Marrow Donations. This was not originally included in our Blood Drive, but was very successful with 14 new donors added to the bone marrow registry; including a group member.

For our presentation, we will have Ann Herbert, the Blood Mobile Coordinator, speak about the San Diego Blood Bank and Blood Mobile. We will show a video and give background information about our Blood Drive. After a basic introduction we will discuss the moral and ethical frameworks we looked at when working on our project. They are Utilitarianism, Virtue Theory, Deontology, Social Contract Theory, and the Relational Accounts of Moral Reasoning. At the end we will sum up our project and give the reasons why we felt that it was successful. At that point we will open to answer any questions.
