EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

We first started our project by formulating a team. We then decided that we wanted to take the utilitarian approach by starting a social change program that would benefit a large amount of people. They would benefit because they would receive some information that they probably would not get otherwise. Since HIV and AIDS are affecting so many lives in the world today we decided that we should try to do our part by starting an HIV awareness program in our corporations.

Our next step was obvious, we needed to get as much current information as possible on HIV and AIDS. It started out with Stanley doing some research at the library but he was having some problems getting current information. This problem was solved when our generous professor gave us a boost by providing us with the CDC AIDS information package. By contacting the CDC AIDS hotline we were able to get the latest statistics on HIV and AIDS. We also gathered a large amount of information by using the CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse by way of their NAC FAX services. All of this information put us on the right track of getting the most valuable information out to our fellow employees.

Dave distributed HIV and AIDS information to his company, Bell Industries, by way of E-mail. He received a very positive response from many of his fellow workers who wanted to know more. Dave also responded to all the inquiries he got back from his article by E-mail. When he could not answer a question he provided them with CDC's number and the process of HIV awareness was started at Bell Industries.

Karen tried to get an article printed in her newsletter but had a problem. Since her company just changed ownership, the newsletter was no longer in use. She then talked to her supervisor who suggested that she could use the company bulletin board to distribute any information that she felt was important. Karen then formulated an HIV pamphlet that she posted on the board for everyone to see at her branch at Home Savings of America. Karen also interofficed pamphlets to the other branches throughout San Diego. She also talked about HIV and AIDS to many of her co-workers.

Greg and Stanley had no problem with getting an article in the Shipbuilder. However, since the November issue had already closed they had to settle with a promise for the December issue. However, they were also able to post a copy of the article on all of the bulletin boards throughout the entire company of NASSCO. This proved to be very successful because they are each hearing many of their co-workers talk about HIV related issues. We also heard of a few people talking about the opportunity to get tested for free at one of the posted testing locations. We did run into a road block with the human resource department. We have to agree with our professor when he says he hates the words human resources. We came out of the battle of trying to get some kind of HIV and AIDS policy in our employee handbook wounded by rejection. However, we have still not given up and will try to take the matter up to the next step after the HIV awareness article comes out in the Shipbuilder.

Overall, we all think that this program has been a great success. We all learned that we still have much to learn about HIV and AIDS. We all enjoyed the satisfaction of knowing that we made a difference. It will be nice to think that by providing this information to our co-workers we may have saved someone's life.
