Community involvement is crucial to everyone. Without community involvement in local politics, projects or policies may be approved or rejected without the input of every day citizens who would be ultimately affected. For this reason we have decided to help the Clairemont Town Council to increase its membership as our project. The Council was established in 1956 to promote the civic, educational, cultural, and commercial activities as well as the general welfare of the community of Clairemont. Its main objective is to advocate on behalf of the community, facilitate discussion of community issues, take a stand as authorized by the membership, communicate those views to the appropriate organizations, and sponsor programs which benefit the community of Clairemont.
To help the Clairemont Town Council with its efforts we participated in the following activities:
· Met with the Town council presidentThe Council president was very pleased with our efforts and has noticed an increase in membership as a result of our project.
· Distributed handouts to different businesses
· Assisted in the Clairemont Mayoral debate
· Contacted all schools in the area to post an ad in their newsletters. ·We assessed all the moral frameworks discussed by Rachel's' in his book "The Elements of Moral Philosophy" and we have come to the conclusion that our project has two moral frame works tied to it. The first and foremost is Utilitarianism which ultimately states that an action is right if it promotes the greatest good for the greatest number of people. The second frame work is Social Contract Theory which states "Morality consists of a set of rules, governing how people are to treat one another, that rational people will agree to accept, for their mutual benefit, on the condition that others follow those rules as well."
By encouraging the citizens of Clairemont to join the Town Council we are encouraging them to represent themselves to the city of San Diego so that they can collaborate to bring the greatest number of good to the greatest number of people. In other words, the more people join the more likely that their good will be taken into account. This falls into Utilitarian ground as most forms of government do.
The other obvious goal that any form or level of government tries to attain is setting rules for the mutual benefit of everyone which also includes the Clairemont Town Council. The council's goal is to formulate policies within their community just as any other government. This falls right on the lines of Social Contract theory. Our goal as a group was to increase the number of people in the Town Council so that more people could relate their point of view when formulating any new policies or supporting any new projects.
We feel that our project was successful by making people aware of The Clairemont Town Council and making the membership grow will benefit everyone in the community.
