Guest Speaker:
John Ballantine, iSTART Ventures.
No stranger to start-ups, John has been involved in starting more than nine ventures and has more than 11 years of senior management experience in the computer and electronic commerce industry. In 1994, John recognized the enormous potential of the Internet as a superior distribution channel for digital products and with his partner Tim Choate, founded Online Interactive. As president and CEO of Online Interactive, John grew the company into a 120 person outfit and successfully engineered the company's acquisition by MicroWarehouse, a two billion dollar direct marketer of computer products. John is also a co-founder of FreeShop.com, a powerful online direct marketing vehicle that enables companies to reach and retain millions of online shoppers. Since its inception, FreeShop.com has generated more than five million orders for thousands of nationally recognized clients, including The Wall Street Journal, Johnson & Johnson, eBay, and The Walt Disney Company. John was also instrumental in the subsequent spin-off of FreeShop.com from Online Interactive and played a major role in the company's IPO in the Fall of 1999. Prior to starting Online Interactive, John was Vice President of Softdisk Publishing, where he launched the world's first downloadable software store. John holds a B.S. in Finance and International Business from the Sand Diego State University School of Business.Questions to be addressed:
1) 'Moral dilemmas' tend to be somewhat industry specific. What do you consider the greatest ethical challenge facing your industry today?
2) One of the current issues facing virtually all companies today is that of privacy. What is your company policy with respect to issues of privacy -- either privacy for internet customers, or privacy of employee information?
3) Recently Amazon.com has received some criticism for a change in its 'ownership of information' policy:
http://www.amazon.com/privacy-noticeIn short, Amazon now reserves the right to 'sell' customer information to third parties. What is your 'take' on the ownership of customer information? Do you have an explicit policy related to 'selling' customer information to third-party vendors?
4) Most strategic decisions impact a number of organizational constituencies. When you engage in strategic decision-making, what 'stakeholders' do you put first in the process? Second? Third? How do you balance the potentially competing interests of stakeholder groups?
5) Experience counts for a lot. If you were to offer one piece of advice to executives regarding how to wade through difficult ethical dilemmas, what would that advice be?
