Extremophile work: Yellowstone National Park
Openings exist for Biology
499 students Spring 2006-07
Must have microbiology background
and understanding of microbes.
We have developed methods
to grow acid hot spring organisms by enrichment culture. We are working as
a team of 5-6 researchers developing methods to grow, isolate and preserve
new genera of organisms from the enrichments of high temperature low pH thermal
springs. The cells grow at 70°C to 90°C at pH 3. Several topics concerning
the growth of these new microorganisms from Yellowstone Thermal
Spings will be covered.
Meeting time Fridays 1-3pm
Credit available 1 unit

Algal research:
We are currently also seeking one students at the MS level to work on developing farther an existing model green alga system for an algal Chlamydomonas minicell . The minicell separates from the cell body and is motile and able to under go gametic cell fusion. We are seeking a graduate student to examine cell membrane fusion in this new model.
