There is general agreement among scientists that tropical rainforests cover about 7% of the earth's surface and contain more than half of all living plants and animals. It is estimated by the National Academy of Sciences that by 2034, 50% of the remaining rainforests will be lost and by 2081 all the forests will be gone. These rainforests are being systematically destroyed with technological superiority, and will eventually be lost to extinction. The incentives behind this process are complex and the difficulty of stopping or even slowing the process is extreme. Letter writing can be a significant force in shaping policy making decisions that affect the future of rainforests around the world. It is something we can do that will be important for all of our tomorrows.
