Dialing from Home

----------------------------------------------------------------------

When dialing from home to the campus -- expect trouble; usually you are not disappointed. For those dialing from home, here are some unique problems to watch out for:

  • If you have an extension phone in the house and someone tries to use it (not knowing you are on with your computer) you will get errors and most likely be disconnected from the computer you are logged into.

  • Another common problem dialing in from home is call waiting, which alerts you that another call is coming in. Again, this signal will cause garbage on the line and usually disconnect you form the central computer. There is an option offered by the local telephone companies that lets you deactivate call waiting (*70) while you are on the computer.

  • A very elusive problem is simple noise on the telephone line, caused by conditions within the telephone system. The only thing you can do with line noise is hang up and dial again. Many times the problem will go away because the circuit selection when dialing is random.

  • Finally, remember that you are paying for voice-quality line from the local telephone company rather than a data-quality line. If you report problems, the local telephone company probably will not be concerned about poor data transmission.
