Step1: Before You Start

We offer Fall admission only. Please remember that complete
applications (including all supporting materials) must be
received no later than February 1. Also, apply for Financial
Aid by the California state deadline through FAFSA.

You will need to submit material to three different places:
1. Submit the university application online at CSU Mentor
2. Graduate Admissions
3. Department of English and Comparative Literature

Step 2: Now, Submit the Basics

GRADUATE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Online Application
Students applying for admission should electronically submit the university application available
at http://www.csumentor.edu along with the $55.00 application fee.

The following materials should be submitted as a complete package directly to:
Graduate Admissions
Enrollment Services
San Diego State University
San Diego, CA 92182-7416

1. Official transcripts (in sealed envelopes) from all postsecondary institutions attended
2. GRE scores (www.ets.org, SDSU institution code 4682)
3. TOEFL score, if medium of instruction was in a language other than English
(www.ets.org, SDSU institution code 4682)

Note about GRE: Please take your GRE exam at least six weeks before applying so that your scores
will arrive by the February 1 deadline. To be considered for classified graduate standing, you must
achieve a minimum of 550 on your verbal section and 1050 overall.

Step 3: Then, We Need Supporting Material

DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The following materials should be submitted as a complete package directly to:
Department of English and Comparative Literature
Attention: MFA Creative Writing Program
San Diego State University
5500 Campanile Drive
San Diego, CA 92182-6020

1. A sample of creative work in your chosen genre
Poetry: 15 poems
Fiction: 30 pages of prose
2. A 750-1000 word statement of purpose
3. Three letters of recommendation
