Tenure-Track Positions

Department Chair

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University is seeking applications for a Department Chair, to be appointed at the rank of Professor beginning August 2008. The Department works collaboratively with SDSU Title VI Centers (Language Acquisition Resource Center, National Resource Center for Latin American Studies, and the Center for International Business Education and Research), with other departments and colleges within SDSU, and other institutions of higher learning.

Applicants should offer evidence of an ongoing scholarly research agenda, teaching effectiveness, and the ability to work well with faculty, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds. We seek an educator with previous administrative experience who will be a team player and mentor, and who is committed to working collaboratively with the administration, faculty, staff, and students, as well as other programs and departments. The candidate must have native or near native proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese, and English and be committed to innovation in undergraduate and graduate education. We welcome candidates who specialize in Latin American, Peninsular, or Luso/Brazilian literatures and cultures, or; Linguistics. The successful candidate may teach both graduate and undergraduate level courses. This is an excellent opportunity for an established teacher-scholar to play a major role in determining the future of the department's programs and course offerings.

Assistant Professor of Portuguese

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for August 2008. Ph.D. in Portuguese is preferred. Areas of specialization include Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Culture, or Portuguese Linguistics. Knowledge of Peninsular Literature, Latin American Literature or Translation Studies is desirable. Candidates must demonstrate native or near-native in Portuguese and English. Teaching assignment may include both undergraduate and master’s level courses. Applicants should offer evidence of teaching effectiveness, a scholarly research agenda, and the ability to work well with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Send letter of application, CV, and complete dossier containing evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarly output, and at least three recent confidential letters of reference to Chair, Search Committee.
