TA HandbookTAs must be enrolled each semester in at least six units of coursework that fulfill degree requirements, except during the terminal semester(Thesis) in which three units are permissible. TAs should not have a workload -- teaching + coursework -- in excess of 15 units. Any TA teaching two 4-unit classes can only register for 7 units of coursework. In order to take 9 units of coursework you must fill out an "Excess Study Load" form and have it approved. A TA teaching 6 units may take up to 9 units of coursework. An "Excess Study Load" form is only to enroll in more coursework, not to teach more. TAs must be a regularly matriculating student, maintaining a 3.0 GPA in all program related coursework, file an Advancement to candidacy by the third semester, and file an official program of study with the Graduate Division by the end of the second semester of a 30 or 36 unit program. The maximum number of appointments for an individual will be limited to four semesters for students in 30 to 36 unit master s degree programs. Per Federal Regulation Code (Title 8) section 214.2 (f), the maximum number of hours a foreign student with an F 1 Visa may work is 20 hours/week while the university is in regular session. Foreign students may work up to 40 hours/week when the university is not in session or during it annual vacation period(summer).
