GA HandbookA GA must enroll each semester in at least six units of coursework that fulfill degree requirements, except during the terminal semester (Thesis) in which three units are permissible. A GA must continue as a regularly matriculating student, maintaining a 3.0 GPA in all program related coursework, filing an Advancement to candidacy by the third semester, and filing an official program of study with the Graduate Division by the end of the second semester of a 30 or 36 unit program. The maximum load for a GA appointment is 20 hours/week. A graduate student may work more than 20 hours per week during academic breaks. Overtime may be required for hours in excess of 40 hours in a week. Per Federal Regulation Code (Title 8) section 214.2 (f), the maximum number of hours a foreign student with an F 1 Visa may work is 20 hours/week while the university is in regular session. Foreign students may work up to 40 hours/week when the university is not in session or during it annual vacation period(summer). The maximum number of appointments for an individual is generally limited to four semesters for students in 30 to 36 unit master s degree programs.
