Welcome!

Welcome to the home page of the department of Spanish & Portuguese, one of 20 departments within the College of Arts and Letters.

In the past two years we have hired four new full-time faculty members: Liana Ewald (Boston University), Peter Lindquist (Universidad de Alicante), Billy Acree (University of North Carolina), and Iñigo Yanguas (Georgetown University).

Our undergraduate Certificate in Spanish-English Translation and Interpretation has a new director, Christian Degueldre, a new direction, and a new life. Our graduate program has undergone significant changes and should be in the catalog for the academic year 2008-09. Our undergraduate language program has a new director, Iñigo Yanguas. The language program has two "tracks": one for US Hispanics and the other one for foreign language learners.

Spanish is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world and the second most frequently used language in the Southwest. Because of San Diego's proximity to Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, many students here are interested in learning Spanish. Their reasons range from practical application in jobs, travel, reading or recreation to a curiosity about the culture or literature of Spanish-speaking countries. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a wide range of courses and programs designed to satisfy the varied needs of all students and members of the greater San Diego community. Government at all levels employ those with Spanish-speaking abilities, as does a wide variety of sectors including law enforcement, health care, banking, tourism, education, foreign affairs, public relations, and social services.
